Public Safety Bureau Seeks Comment on Multimedia WEA Messages
On April 26, 2018, the Commission published in the Federal Register that the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau (“Bureau”) is seeking comment to refresh the record on facilitating multimedia content in Wireless Emergency Alerts (“WEA”) messages, as raised in the 2016 Report and Order and Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking.
The Commission previously sought comment on establishing an appropriate regulatory framework and timeframe for incorporating multimedia capability into WEA alert messages. Since then, the Commission has revised its rules for WEA regarding geo-targeting, embedded references, and Spanish-language alerts, among other changes. The Bureau seeks to refresh the record with any new information or arguments, specifically focusing on addressing the technical feasibility for requiring multimedia content in WEA messages, including the current state of multimedia testing and standards development, and costs and benefits of including multimedia content in WEA messages.
